What is psoriasis?

It is a chronic skin condition which causes red & scaly patches on skin. An autoimmune infection, psoriasis causes rapid build-up of skin cells that accumulate on skin surface.

Causes of psoriasis

It can be caused by genetic & environmental factors. Enlargement of blood vessels on skin, increase in WBCs & accumulation of skin cells can be other causes.

Symptoms of psoriasis

It causes red patches on the skin, that can be inflamed, scaly & itchy. The patches have silvery scales on them. There could also be dry, cracked skin that may bleed or itch.

PLaque psoriasis

80-90% of people with psoriasis experience plaque psoriasis. It causes raised red and inflamed patches on elbows, knees, scalp and lower back.

psoriatic arthritis

This condition causes joint pain, stiffness and swelling. It can affect any part of the body including fingertips & spine, and can range from mild to severe.

guttate psoriasis

This kind is common in childhood. It causes small pink spots on torso, arms and legs. The spots are not thick or raised like plaque psoriasis.

pustular psoriasis

It is common in adults and causes
pus-filled blisters and broad areas of red and inflamed skin. It is localised to smaller parts of the body like hands or feet.

inverse psoriasis

Inverse or hidden psoriasis causes red, shiny or inflamed skin. It causes patches to develop on armpits , breasts, groin or around skinfolds of genitals.

erythrodermic psoriasis

It is a rare and severe kind of psoriasis which is particularly inflammatory. It covers large sections of the body at once. The skin appears sunburned and scaly.

diagnosis

The diagnosis includes a simple physical examination, where doctors examine your skin, scalp & nails. A biopsy maybe done if symptoms are unclear.

Psoriasis triggers

Triggers of psoriasis are different for every individual. Stress, alcohol, cuts, injuries and the likes of strep throat infection are common triggers.

Topical treatment

Ointments and creams can be applied topically on the affected areas to control psoriasis. Regularly moisturising the skin can also help in reducing symptoms.
