What is A stroke?

Stroke occurs with a sudden interruption in blood supply of the brain. This causes the part of the body that the injured brain controls to stop working.

A Medical Emergency

Stroke is a medical emergency. It occurs rapidly and requires immediate treatment. FAST treatment (explained later) can lessen the brain damage it causes.

ACT 'FAST'

Stroke needs to be treated within three hours of symptoms. Face (F), Arms (A), Speech (S) and Time (T) test, which involves calling emergency, is needed for this.

Do the 'Fast' Test

Check if one side of the Face droops, raise both Arms (see if one drifts downward), repeat a sentence (notice Slurring). Call emergency instantly (T).

Symptoms Of Stroke

Sudden numbness or weakness in face, arms, legs (especially on one side), confusion, trouble speaking and difficulty in understanding speech.

Other Symptoms

Trouble seeing in one or both eyes, trouble walking, dizziness, loss of balance, lack of coordination, sudden severe headache with no known cause.

Stroke Risk factors

Having high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, smoking, obstructive sleep apnea and family history of stroke can increase your risk.

Lifestyle Risk factors

Being overweight or obese, physical inactivity, binge drinking, high salt and high fat diet, and use of drugs can also increase the risk of stroke.
