Eczema is a condition that can make your skin irritated or inflamed. It causes itchiness and rashes on the skin. The condition may sometimes cause blisters.

This a common form of eczema which makes skin red and itchy. It usually starts in childhood and gets milder with age. It can be chronic and tends to flare periodically.

These include contact dermatitis (touching irritants), dyshidrotic eczema (causes blisters on hands, feet), hand eczema (affects hands) & neurodermatitis (similar to atopic).

Atopic dermatitis causes rashes in crease of elbows or knees, rashes that may cause dark skin, small bumps which may leak on scratching, & infections.

Eczema usually occurs in people who have family history of allergies or asthma. The condition maybe linked to immune system's response to irritants.

An eczema flare up can be triggered by contact with certain everyday items and foods that can cause an allergic reaction like peanuts, soy & eggs to name a few.

Dry skin, soap, cleansers, body wash, laundry detergent, lotions, rough fabric, dust, smoke, pet dander, stress and anxiety are common triggers of eczema.

Infection, scarring, itching or loss of sleep are complications associated with eczema. Eczema also preceeds asthma and hay fever at times.

Creams and ointments with corticosteroids maybe prescribed to reduce inflammation. Antibiotics may be needed in case of infections caused by eczema.

Prevent triggers, use moisturisers, aloe vera gel and cold compresses to soothe itching. Clean the skin with hypoallergenic soap every day.

Moisturise your skin, avoid sudden changes in temperature or humidity, manage stress, avoid scratchy material like wool, harsh soaps and pay attention to food triggers.
