What is Dengue?

Dengue fever is a mosquito-borne viral infection that is common in warm, tropical climates. It is a severe flu-like illness accompanied by joint pain.

Dengue causes high fever with at least two of these symptoms - severe headache, pain behind the eyes, muscle and joint pain, rash, swollen glands, nausea and vomiting.

Diagnosis

If you are experiencing symptoms of dengue, you must get yourself tested soon. Your doctor will conduct a blood test for diagnosis.

Dengue fever is transmitted via bites of female mosquito harbouring the virus. The disease is not contagious, meaning human to human transmission is not possible.

Complication

If severe, dengue may lead to abdominal pain, bleeding under the skin, frequent vomiting and rapid breathing. One should also keep a check on the platelet count .

A severe form of dengue fever called dengue hemorrhagic fever, can cause severe bleeding, a sudden drop in blood pressure (shock) and death in some cases.

Treatment

There is no specific treatment for dengue fever. Your doctor will prescribe medications to control the symptoms. Drinking plenty of fluids may help.

Prevention

To prevent dengue, you need to control mosquito breeding near you. Standing water, empty pots and vessels, and open garbage are the most common breeding grounds.

Follow precautions

During dengue spread use mosquito repellent and wear full-sleeved clothes before stepping out to minimise skin exposure to mosquitoes.

Personal protection

It is important to keep your indoors clean and mosquito free. Do not store water and use repellents or nets. Also, keep your doors and windows closed during outbreaks.

Diet

Along with medical assistance, eat a nutritious diet. Drink plenty of liquids. According to studies, papaya leaf juice may support recovery.
