What are kidney stones?

Kidney stones are hard deposits of crystals that usually originate in the kidneys or along the urinary tract. The stones vary in size.

Severe pain on one side or the back is the most common symptom. As the stone moves, the pain changes location and intensity.

Watch out for signs and symptoms. If you experience severe pain, then consult your doctor immediately to address the issue.

Diagnosis

Your doctor may perform a series of tests like X-ray, CT scan, ultra sound or urine test to determine the size and location of the stone.

Risk factors

Dehydration is the biggest risk factor. Other diseases such as high blood pressure, diabetes, and obesity may increase the risk too.

Causes

Not drinking enough water, a diet high in sodium, protein, glucose and some health conditions may lead to kidney stones .

Complications

If the stone gets trapped in your ureter it may cause urinary obstruction. This can further lead to kidney infection or damage.

Prevention

Proper hydration is the best preventive measure. Less consumption of  oxalate-rich foods and salt might help alleviate the risk.
