Hypothyroidism

Hypothyroidism is caused because of an underactive thyroid gland (located in the neck), which is unable to produce enough thyroid hormones.

The thyroid is responsible for providing energy to nearly every organ in the body. It controls how your heart beats and how the digestive system works.

Normal functions of the body slow down because of insufficient thyroid hormones. Weight gain and fatigue are early symptoms of hypothyroidism.

Causes

An autoimmune disease, hypothyroidism may occur because of an over response to hyperthyroidism treatment, thyroid surgery, radiation therapy & some medication.

Symptoms

Fatigue, weight gain, muscle weakness, constipation, dry skin, decreased sweating, slow heart rate, high cholesterol levels, depression, dry or thin hair...

Difficulties with fertility, menstrual changes, voice hoarseness, and puffy and sensitive face are other common symptoms of hypothyroidism.

In infants

Hypothyroidism may cause yellowing of skin, difficulty in breathing, constipation, poor muscle tone and excessive sleepiness in infants.

In kids and teens

Poor growth may result in short stature. Delayed puberty, poor mental development & delayed development of permanent teeth are symptoms of hypothyroidism in kids and teens.

Complications

Untreated hypothyroidism can result in goiter, heart problems, infertility, birth defects & mental health issues. Infants born with it may have mental and physical development problems.

Visit a doctor

See a doctor if you feel tired for no reason, have a puffy face, constipation, hoarse voice or are gaining weight. A blood test is done to diagnose hypothyroidism.

Treatment

Oral medication helps in restoring hormone levels and reversing symptoms. It needs to be taken daily. Medication helps in lowering cholesterol and reverses weight gain caused by hypothyroidism.
