The best way to avoid the risks of getting sexually transmitted diseases and infections is to abstain from sex. However, it is a difficult practice so there are other tips which can help a couple lead a healthy sex life.

Before having sex, establish a committed relationship that allows trust and open communication. You should be able to discuss past sexual histories, any previous sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) or intravenous drug users (IV) drug use. You should not feel coerced or forced into having sex.

Having only one sex partner keeps you safe from sexual infections.

Don't use of recreational drugs, including alcohol, before and during sexual activity. It protects you against risks such as impaired judgment and loss of consciousness, thereby preventing unwanted pregnancy also.

Condoms act as a barrier against infections, which can be transmitted sexually and also prevents unwanted pregnancy. Always use latex condoms and learn how to use them properly to prevent tearing of condoms during intercourse.

If you or your partner is suffering from any kind of STD or STI, prefer not to indulge in sex. There are other diseases like tuberculosis, flu, cold etc where sex should be avoided.

Scientific studies have shown that contact with infected blood, semen, anal fluids mainly by unprotected sex puts one at a high risk of sexually transmitted diseases and infections.

Clean genital areas before and after having sex. This prevents infection and its transmission.

If you don't want to get pregnant, ask you partner to either use condoms or you can go for birth contraceptive pills after consulting a gynaecologist. There are other forms of temporary and permanent contraception also available in the market like copper-T, cervical caps etc.

Anyone diagnosed as having an STI should be treated to reduce the risk of transmitting an STI, especially a pregnant woman to an infant. Follow the full course of medicine. Avoid sexual activity while being treated for an STI. Ensure that the partner is also diagnosed and treated.
