Cancer - Gastric ulcer

Q: What is gastric ulcer? Can it lead to cancer?

A:Gastric ulcer is also known as peptic ulcer and is a sore formed on the lining of the stomach where it joins the small intestine. The stomach secretes various juices and acids that help in digestion of food. These acids are normally produced in the quantity that is needed to break down the food particles. Sometimes, when these acids are produced in excess, they erode the lining of the stomach and the duodenum resulting in ulcers. There is no direct relation between the occurence of gastric ulcer leading to cancer of the stomach. However, certain factors like a bacterial infection and age may predispose a person towards stomach cancer. Research is being done in this area for concrete proof. Lifestyle modifications may have to be made if the person is suffering from peptic ulcers to reduce the risk of complications.
