After ten years as a haematologist, Stephen Lock entered full-time medical journalism in 1965 at the British Medical Journal, serving as its editor in chief from 1975 - 91. His interests were particularly concerned with journalology - the structure, process, and outcome of scientific journals - research misconduct, and peer review, the latter two being treated in two of the seven books he authored or edited. A co-founder of the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (the Vancouver Group), he also served as founder president of the European Association of Science Editors. In retirement, he has worked at the Wellcome Institute for the History of Medicine in London, has served as an associate editor of the UK Dictionary of National Biography and has edited the Oxford Illustrated Companion to Medicine, whose third edition is due to appear in early 2001.
