Minor strokes may worsen vision

Glaucoma patients are likely to lose more of their vision if they suffer minor strokes.

Minor stroke - or silent cerebral infarction (SCI) – is a disturbance in blood supply to the brain that the sufferer is not even aware of and it may lead to loss of some brain function. Glaucoma, or raised pressure within the eye that can damage the optic nerve, is the second leading cause of blindness and experts estimate that more than 60 million people in the World will suffer from it by 2010.

Researchers in Hong Kong studied 286 patients with glaucoma to investigate whether the presence of silent cerebral infract (SCI) is related to field progression (visual loss)  in patients with newly diagnosed normal-tension glaucoma (NTG). Out of 286 patients, 64 were having SCI (SCI+) and 222 were free from it (SCI –).

Nearly 30 percent of these patients suffered SCIs over a three-year period. Through brain scans, the researchers found that glaucoma patients who suffered minor strokes were 61 percent more likely to lose more of their vision than other glaucoma patients who did not suffer minor strokes.

The researchers concluded that minor strokes in the brain are likely to affect the eye as they pose a significant risk factor for loss of vision and recommend that stroke prevention is important to stop the deterioration of glaucoma.
