How can I stop using anti-depressants?

Q: I am suffering from depression and taking long term medicines like amitriptyline and fluoxetine. I am feeling better now and want to withdraw these medicines. But I am unable to do it. What is the best way to withdraw them? I have a family history of depression but no one was able to diagnose it correctly. There is a common problem of acidity in our family and my father wants to take Flouxite. But he is afraid as he was affected with glaucoma once. Please advise.

A:You can gradually decrease the dose of the antidepressants over a month or so. Both amitriptyline and fluoxetine have adverse effects on eyes such as blurred vision and focussing of objects. In addition amitriptyline can increase intraocular (eye) pressure and hence should be avoided in patients of glaucoma.
