Q. My 19-month-old son has severe constipation for the past several months. He is being given Duphalac syrup 12 ml twice daily. The dosage was gradually increased from 5 ml to 12 ml. But it did not help. Now the paediatrician has prescribed Cremaffin syrup - 5 ml daily. Is it safe for our child to consume this? Is it OK to give Duphalac 25 ml every day? What are the other alternatives?

A.  Cremaffin can be given at the proper dose for a child of 19 months. There is no need to give two drugs. Efforts should be made to find out the cause of the severe constipation.
