Q. Three days ago, at my buttock crack, something started to grow which looked like a pimple. It is about a dollar coin in size and swollen. It feels like there are three lumps at that area. Now it has spread to the lips of my vaginal area. There are very pain and sensitive to touch. I have problem sitting standing and lying down because of the pain. I don't know if the pain is due to friction of those lumps or is there any other reason for the pain. I have resorted to taking several pain killers. I wash that area thrice daily and apply antiseptic lotion. Today one of the lumps burst for no reason and pus cam out. There was a yellowish coloured liquid with blood. Now the pain has slightly eased and there is no more pus however it is still quite swollen and blood is still coming out. What is this due to? I am very worried as the pain is rather unbearable and I find it hard to see a doctor for this because of the place these lumps are located.

A.  As per your history and other details the most probable diagnosis is: Folliculitis. Folliculitis is the name given to a group of skin conditions in which there are inflamed hair follicles. The result is a tender red spot, often with a surface pustule. It can be due to infection, occlusion, irritation. To determine if folliculitis is due to an infection, swabs should be taken from the pustules for culture in the laboratory. Bacterial folliculitis is commonly due to Staph aureus. If the infection involves the deep part of the follicle, it results in a painful boil. Recommended treatment includes careful hygiene, antiseptic cleanser or cream, antibiotic ointment, and oral antibiotics. Other causes of folliculitis are yeasts, fungi and secondary to shaving or waxing.
