Is it advisable to take Menopace after menopause?

Q: I am 50 years old and I have attained menopause. My last periods were last month. I have been taking Menopace for the past 3-4 years as prescribed by the doctor. I have consulted many doctors but no one has given me the right advice. One says you can stop taking this drug but the other says that I can continue taking it. Will it affect me in any other way? I am fine so far, except that I have high blood pressure and I am on Atpure 25mg (1 tablet per day) for the past 5-6 years. Please help.

A:I do not know why your doctor has prescribed Menopace - a non-prescription, over the counter (OTC) product which is nothing more than an exorbitantly priced simple multi-vitamin/mineral formulation. Similar formulations by other manufacturers are available at one-fourth the price. The product has no specific use in menopausal women. The manufacturers have used the brand name to create an impression as if it has some specific use in post-menopausal women. This is a commercial tactic. Atpure is the brand name of atenolol which is used in hypertension. It is similar to widely used Aten brand (of Cadila Healthcare) that is priced at Rs. 26 for 14 tablets of 50mg each.
