Does linoleic acid help lose weight?

Q: I am 27 years old weighing 155 pounds and have an unusually high body fat percentage. I read that conjugated linoleic acid supplements help in fat loss. I also read about certain side effects. I have high triglercides and low HDL. I was suffering from PCOS before but I am fine now. Do you think it is safe for me take the supplements?

A:Most patients of PCOS are over-weight. A judicious diet accompanied by exercise is the best course of action to lose weight and fat. Commercial companies keep on claiming benefits that are not scientifically proven resulting not only in loss of money but even more importantly result in delay in instituting proper treatment. Linoleic acid (popularly sold as Evening Primrose Oil) is an Over the Counter (OTC), non-prescription product and is only useful in eczema, mastalgia (pain in breast) and Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS).
