Q. Can there be latex allergy caused by prolonged exposure to hair weave bonding using natural rubber cement being applied to the scalp and hair?

A.  Glues used in hair extensions and false eyelashes may contain natural rubber latex and should be avoided by those sensitive to latex. One case, reported in year 2002 in USA was of a 37-year-old woman who had a severe allergic reaction after exposure to hair bonding glue while getting a hair weave. The woman did not realise she was allergic to latex and experienced intense itching all over her body, as well as hives, swelling, runny nose and eyes, and a rapid heart rate. The researchers estimate about 7 percent of the population has a potential sensitivity to latex, although only about 1 percent will develop obvious symptoms. Hair bonding glue contains high concentrations of soluble latex antigen and may cause anaphylaxis. Repeated glue exposure may potentially sensitise consumers.
