Is it safe to have natural micronised progesterone capsules during the first trimester?

Q: I am 23 years old and in the 9th week of pregnancy. Is it safe to have natural micronised progesterone capsules during first trimester?

A:The use of progesterone (a potent hormone), irrespective of whether it is micronised or not, is indicated only when there is documented deficiency such as hormonal replacement in menopausal women, premenstrual syndrome (PMS), menstrual irregularities due to disovulation or anovulation, dysfunctional uterine bleeding, infertility due to inadequate luteal phase and for use during IVF. Only in case of corpus luteal deficiency can one use this hormone during first month of pregnancy. Otherwise it is not to be used during pregnancy. Unfortunately some manufacturers in India, for purely profit motivation, are actively promoting the use of progesterone for vague conditions like to help pregnancy as if it is a vitamin. Such promotion and use is illegal, unethical and can be dangerous.
