What are the side effects of Cartisafe?

Q: My 70 years old mother is suffering from arthritis. The doctor has prescribed her Cartisafe forte. Is Cartisafe forte safe? What are the side effects of Cartisafe? She is taking treatment for high blood pressure also. Please advise.

A:Cartisafe is the brand name; the name of the drug is glucosamine. Glucosamine does not give relief in pain due to osteoarthritis, as per a clinical trial reported in the American Journal of Medicine. Patients on glucosamine did no better on several parameters: pain, stiffness, function, overall satisfaction and pain-killers use. The Danish and Swedish drug regulators have alerted all doctors about Glucosamine's potential risk of developing high cholesterol levels, vision disorders, peripheral oedema, pulmonary embolism, seizures (fits), myocardial infarction (heart attack), increased liver enzymes (liver impairment), increased serum creatinine levels (kidney impairment), joints pain, asthma, diabetes and colitis.
