What causes raised bilirubin level?
Q: I am a 67 years old man suffering from diabetes for the last 30 years and taking insulin for the last 20 years. For the last three years, my bilirubin (total) is 1.8 mg/dl, conjugated bilirubin is 0.6 mg/dl and unconjugated bilirubin - 1.2 mg/dl. I do not have any liver problem. Recently, the doctor found an 8 mm stone in my gall bladder. Normocytic normochromic anaemia was found again and tear drop cells were seen.
A:The rise in bilirubin (jaundice) is likely due to the gall stone. Please consult a gastroenterologist and seek opinion regarding its removal. The normochromic normocytic anaemia along with dacryocytes (tear-drop cells) is secondary to the liver problem. You need to lose weight as well as control the intake of fats in your diet as you have mentioned that you have fatty liver. Storvas would help in reducing blood lipid (fat) level but please add exercise to your daily routine and cut down alcohol intake, if you consume alcohol.
