A:Nicotinell TTS are transdermal patches to be used over skin. It is available in three strengths: 17.5mg, 35mg, 52.5mg costing (without local taxes): 30 patches, Rs. 3043, Rs. 3175 and Rs. 3492 respectively. The dose depends on the smoking habit. For example, people who smoke more than 20 cigarettes a day will initially require 30cm-square patch every 24 hours; less than 20 cigarettes per day: 20cm-square patch every 24 hours. Maximum treatment period is 3 months though most people will need optimum treatment for 6-8 weeks and then half the dose for another 3-4 weeks. The patch has to be applied to a non-hairy area on trunk or upper arm. Smoking must be stopped when the treatment begins. Bupropion (Trade name: Zyban) is a oral tablet. It is used when the person is continuing to smoke. A target date for stopping smoking is set within the first 14 days. The cost is Rs. 400 for 10 tablets. The dose is: initially 1 tablet daily for 6 days to be increased to 1 tablet twice daily. Treatment is generally continued for 7-9 weeks. Treatment should be discontinued if there is no improvement by 7th week.
