What all vaccinations are needed for travellers?

Q: I am a 38 years old male. I had jaundice five years back. I need to travel a lot because of my work. In the past seven months, I travelled about 30,000 km. Mostly I need to travel in the remote parts of the country. I am unable to maintain a proper level of hygiene. What all vaccinations I need to take to prevent waterborne and other diseases?

A:Before embarking on your India travels, you must make yourself familiar with different diseases that are common in Indian climatic conditions.

Hepatitis A and typhoid vaccination is recommended for all travellers to India.

In case of Polio, one-time booster is recommended for any adult traveller who completed the childhood series but never had polio vaccine as an adult.

You need to take Tetanus-Diphtheria revaccination every 10 years.

The most common ailment of travellers is diarrhoea. The main cause of it is unclean food and water. It is advised to carry an antibiotic and an anti-diarrhoea drug if significant diarrhoea occurs. In case of diarrhoea, good amount of fluid intake is required. However, if diarrhoea gets severe you should immediately consult a doctor.

Prophylaxis with mefloquine (Lariam), atovaquone / proguanil (Malarone) or doxycycline is recommended throughout India (including Delhi and Mumbai), except at places located at high altitudes (above 2000 m / 6561 ft).
