Why does my daughter have albumin in urine?

Q: My three years old daughter has diagnosed with albumin (4+) in her urine. She has been taking homeopathic medicines for constipation for the last two months. I used to give her protein powder at night with milk daily for a year. How can albumin be treated?

A:The presence of proteins 4+ is definitely not normal. However I would like to know why was the urine checked in the first place. Does your child have any swelling over body or any other symptoms? The homeopathic medicines and the protein powder may well be the reason for the proteinuria, however, before coming to this conclusion one has to rule out other causes for protein loss in the urine. I would suggest you to consult a paediatric nephrologist. The treatment and its duration would depend on the underlying cause.
