Thickened/shrunken gall bladder

Q: I have been diagnosed for thickened (shrunken) gall bladder. There are no stones or accumulation of fluid, I have been advised to avoid fatty foods. I feel severe heaviness in stomach immedately after consuming food with slight pain on the right upper side of the liver. I tend to gain excess weight around waist, the stools are dark brown in color and also get uncontrollable sleep immediately after taking food. I become inactive for atleast 2-3 hours after taking food. At present I am not taking any medicine. Should removal of gall bladder improve ?

A:Yes, removal of gall bladder will improve your symptoms. A thick walled, shrunken gall bladder indicates a disease process. In the absence of stones a HIDA scan will show a poor gall bladder function. Such patients benefit siginficantly from removal of gall bladder.
