When do retinal complications start in people suffering from high myopia?

Q: I am a 23 years old male student having myopia and my power was -8.5 four years back. So I consulted the doctor for LASIK surgery. But two days before the surgery a traction was found in my retina. Therefore, the doctor did a laser surgery to prevent retinal detachment. When do retinal complication start in high myopics? How many years will my vision be safe with regular screening and treatment? How can I prevent further complications?

A:For high myopia, you need regular screening by a retina specialist who will examine your retina for any holes/ tears etc and advice laser as required. There is no age limit per se beyond which or before which you will have retina complications. Annual screening by a retina specialist is all that you need to do regularly. Also, if you see any flashes/ floaters or decrease in your vision you should contact a retina specialist immediately.
