Is it necessary to terminate pregnancy if a woman has chicken pox?

Q: My cousin is suffering from chicken pox. She has missed periods by a week and has been just confirmed positive for pregnancy. Is it necessary to terminate pregnancy. The doctor says it is necessary to terminate. Some elders at home suggest otherwise. Please advise. She had to terminate pregnancy earlier due to some other complication. I am not in a position to give any other details.

A:There is no reason to terminate pregnancy. The danger of chickenpox is more at the time of delivery - 5 days before and 48 hours after and not during pregnancy. Needless to say that progress of pregnancy should be followed like in any other case through ultrasound and clinical examination from time to time.
