Can a diabetic patient with high cholesterol take nuts?

Q: Can you name the nuts that can be taken by a diabetic and cholesterol patient. I am told that nuts are good for the heart.

A:Nuts are virtually free from carbohydrate and therefore in general can be taken by people with diabetes. As with all foodstuffs of course they should be used in moderation because the calorie content is quite high and for those who have a weight problem large amounts of nuts would be undesirable. I am uncertain regarding their fat content and cannot give you a detailed comment on that aspect, although in small quantities I'm sure they would cause no harm.
