What is hydroureteronephrosis?

Q: My 45 years old uncle is suffering from hydroureteronephrosis. Is their any serious problem? What should my uncle do to eradicate this disease?

A:Hydroureteronephrosis is characterised by dilation or (swelling) of ureter and the kidney resulting from the blockage of the urinary tract along the path of urine flow towards the bladder. The blockage could be most likely due to kidney stone or a stricture (which can happen from a local growth or a tissue mass compressing the outflow tract). Many times, these causes of blockage or the obstruction are treatable by surgery. Your uncle would have undergone scan studies of his kidney/ureter/bladder to actually determine the cause behind the blockage. This could be done in consultation with his Urologist.
