Why does my son always feel sleepy and lethargic?

Answered by: Dr Monica Mahajan

Associate Director, Internal Medicine, Max Hospital, New Delhi

Q. My son is 15 years old. He sleeps at any given time if allowed to. He gets up around 5 AM and most days cannot keep awake after 9 PM. He complains of frequent body pain and a lot of lethargy. Please advise.

A.  Students need approximately eight hours of refreshing sleep to be able to concentrate on their studies. A lot of stress of studies, homework, assignments, examinations and extra-curricular activities do burden our children mentally and physically. Also the lure of internet, video games and electronic gadgets would keep the minds occupied. Multitasking may be one reason your son is tired and lethargic. Also ensure that he has regular meal timings and his diet contains enough vitamins and proteins.
