Why have I been advised a triple screen test?
Answered by : Dr Abha Majumdar
Head, Centre of IVF & Human Reproduction, Dept of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, New Delhi
Q. I am a 34 years old woman who developed diabetes after birth of my son 6 years ago. I am taking insulin for the same. I have also been diagnosed with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and put on Metformin. Now I am again 4 months pregnant and my HbA1c (during 3rd month) was 6.5. The doctor has asked me to get a triple marker test done. What is this test? Is it linked to age and diabetes?
A.  Triple screen test is done in 2nd trimester of pregnancy to rule out Down syndrome, trisomy 18 and neural tube defects. The risk is associated with age and increases as the age increases, so you are required to take this test. For evaluating your basic risk, the knowledge of your having diabetes should also be told to the lab.
