Am I allergic to painkillers?

Q: I am 53 years old man and take Diclofenac 100 mg whenever I have toothache. Sometimes I get swelling on my lips. So I changed to Nimesulide but still I get the swelling on my lips. Am I allergic to painkillers?

A:It appears that you are allergic to at least two drugs: diclofenac and nimesulide. In any case nimesulide is either banned or not approved in most advanced countries such as US, Britain, Canada, Australia etc. due to its serious adverse effects on liver. You may or may not be allergic to other painkillers since they all do not belong to the same group. While you should never use diclofenac and nimesulide, if need be, you can use other painkillers such as Proxyvon, paracetamol, aspirin, etc. Just to be sure a minute quantity of the tablet (say 1/4) can be initially taken as test dose and look for any reaction before consuming the whole dose.
