Is there any harm in taking too many drugs together?

Q: My 35 years old husband is taking medicines for diabetes, high blood pressure, hypothyroidism and Tegretol 200 mg for epilepsy for the last 5 years. Are there any side effects of taking so many medicines at an early age? If yes, what will be the effect? Please advise to safe guard against that.

A:Diabetes and high blood pressure often co-exist; hence both have to be treated. With regard to medicines for seizures (epilepsy), if no attacks have occurred for three consecutive years, then there is a case to stop medication under medical supervision. All the other medicines do not have any serious, permanent side effects. Besides it is more important to control diabetes and high blood pressure even if there are minor adverse effects.
