How can I reduce my uric acid levels?

Q: I am a 30 years old male suffering from gout and taking anti-inflammatory drugs to curb the pain. Recently, I have started experiencing back pain (near the lower spine). My ribs and neck also pain. Whenever it pains, it becomes difficult to pass motions. Are these problems related to gout? Also, my uric acid level is on a higher side. How to do I reduce it? To add, I am taking zyloric and goutnil to improve my health.

A:As you have not described the symptoms on the basis of which you have been diagnosed with gout, I cannot say much on this issue. The only thing I can say is that gout does not usually occur below 40 years of age. Could you please describe your symptoms that have been labelled 'gout'? By the way, uric acid has little to do with gout. High uric acid is only a 'red flag' for bad general health - occurs in persons who eat more than they need, do not exercise, become over weight and are strong candidates for developing high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes and later on, even heart attack. Uric acid is, in a way only a 'watchman' who tells you to improve your lifestyle!

Taking zyloric and goutnil etc. are not the treatment for poor lifestyle. You need to reduce weight by eating less, eating more of fruits and vegetables, salads - especially tomatoes, cabbage, cucumbers, carrots, 'Simla mirch', lots of sprouted daals, simple 'daal' 'roti' and 'chawal'. Completely avoid soft drinks and sea food, and most non vegetarian foods. Simple vegetarian food is absolutely fine.
