Erectile dysfunction

Q: I am 26 yrs old and my husband is 28 yrs old. We have been married for the past 1 year. We are normal healthy adults with no health problems. I usually achieve an orgasm in 2 minutes and my husband follows me. But when we try to prolong our intercourse, before we reach orgasm, my husband is not able to maintain his erection beyond 3 minutes. Does it mean he has erectile dysfunction? Does he need some help?

A:No, this does not mean he has erectile dysfunction. He is probably what one might term an early ejaculator, rather than a premature one, since 2 to 3 mins by the clock is fair sustenance (many have it much worse). He can be trained to delay his ejaculation time using the `stop-start' and `pinch-squeeze' techniques. These are described well in the book `On Sex & Human Loving' by Masters, Johnson & Kolodny - Jaico Books; Indian paperback edition; available freely at major bookstores. Alternatively, a SSRI drug might help him.
