What is the handicap after removal of one kidney and spleen?

Q: My relative met with an accident and one kidney and his spleen was removed (since it was damaged). I would like to know the exact functions of the spleen and if it is necessary for the patient to take antibiotics till his death? The doctors here give different opinions with some saying antibiotics are not required while others say it is a must. Can you please clarify the same. Also, can the person do manual work like lifting weights etc. and will it affect his health. Thanks. Dilip

A:Your friend is unlikely to have any handicap on account of emergency removal of his one kidney and spleen. He need not have antibiotic throughout his life time. Spleen does help in body's defense against infections. Similarly, removal of one kidney in the presence of one healthy kidney is not likely to affect him adversely.
