How can I help my husband to quit alcohol?
Answered by : Dr Indra Cidambi
Addiction Psychiatrist, Carrier Clinic, New Jersey, USA
Q. My 46 years old husband has been drinking alcohol for the last 10 years. He takes about 4-5 pegs daily. His brother and uncle passed away due to cirrhosis. He wants to quit drinking but is unable to do so. How can I help him? Please suggest.
A.  It is important that he stops drinking ASAP. There are serious complications if he continues drinking.

As a spouse you understanding his addiction is a great support. Do not judge him. Be empathetic! But be firm.

Go to Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) groups near you. Allow him to talk about his cravings, triggers freely.

Ask him to identify triggers and thus encourage relapse prevention.

There are few medications that he can take to avoid drinking. Discuss with your doctor. Naltrexone is a great one. Vivitrol is a monthly injection that he can take.Talk to your doctor about these medications.

Madam, you may actually be the cause for your husband to continue his drinking. How & where does he get the money to drink? You need (not your husband), to see a Counsellor on De-addiction. Im an alcoholic who suffers from the disease of alcoholism. I have been sober for the past 2 years & feel real great.

Hi
Before you try medications, try proven ancient techniques. Try breathing excercises, yoga and Pranayama. I would recomment Sudarshan Kriya, a powerful breathing technique. Many people who started doing doing this have stopped bad habits including smoking and alcohol. To learn Sudarshan Kriya you have to contact Art Of living foundation office in your city or Bangalore.
If you can not do this, then at least get Baba Ramedev's DVD of pranayama and yoga. Let your husband practice at home. Those techniques will definitely help him.
Do not jump into medicines without trying these. Medicines have side effects.
Good luck with your efforts.

Krish
