Is there any cure for night blindness?

Q: I am a 24 years old man who had myopia in both the eyes and underwent Lasik surgery for removal of the spectacles. The doctor told me that I have retinitis pigmentosa and night blindness and it has no cure. Is it true? Also, does smoking harm the eyesight?

A:Retinitis pigmentosa is a progressive disorder, which causes decreased vision at night. Essentially it has no cure but vision can be maximized with certain aids to improve the visual acuity. Certain retinal lesions, which may be part of retinitis pigmentosa may need investigation and treatment as well. Smoking will increase all forms of visual loss and is especially harmful if there is an underlying disorder. It should be avoided at all costs to minimize further damage.
