Is it safe to exercise during pregnancy?

Q: I am a 30 years old female, 5 feet 1 inches tall and weigh 47 kg. I had a missed abortion two months earlier and have recently joined gym for gaining weight. We have started planning for a child again. Is it OK to continue my work-out during pregnancy? Further, I had piles two years back and ever since I have joined the gym, piles have relapsed. Is this due to the exercise I do at the gym?

A:If you have a clearance from your gynaecologist that it is alright for you to exercise, then you can go ahead but with caution. Try not to overdo anything, do some light cardio-vascular work, do not lift very heavy weights and do not exercise for too long. Take care that the air in the gym is ventilated properly and hydrate yourself regularly. As far as the connection with piles and exercise goes, it will be difficult to say. Do check with your doctor if there is something you may not be doing correctly. Drinking water is very helpful for piles as is a fibrous diet, with lots of fruits and vegetables.
