Q. My wife is into her eighth week of pregnancy. There are twenty-four to thirty pus cells found in the urine. Does that infer any pregnancy complications? Would an ultrasound test at this point of time harm the fetus in anyway?

A.  The pus cells in the urine are indicative of urine infection and a culture needs to be done. Also, you need to take a course of antibiotics depending on the culture report. Urine infection during pregnancy can cause preterm labour, abortion, high blood pressure and other problems to the baby like small baby size, if left untreated. An early ultrasound is quite safe, but if you need to get it done for looking at baby growth and abnormalities, you can wait till another two or three weeks.
