Q: I am suffering from skin allergy and I was prescribed Dapsone 100 mg tablet per day for six months. Can I continue using this drug? Please elaborate on its benefits and side effects.

A:Dapsone is actually meant for the treatment of leprosy though it is also used for some specific skin disorders such as inflammation in a variety of conditions such as dermatitis herpetiformis, pyoderma gangrenosum, vasculitis, Henoch Schönlein purpura, Sweets disease and similar other diseases. Its side effects include eye toxicity, liver inflammation, taste alterations, hyperpigmentation, psychosis, high pulse rate, peripheral neuropathy (sometimes with motor loss), etc. Patients on prolonged therapy should undergo regular blood counts and liver function tests from time to time.
