Can I take Deplatta A 75 for hypertension?

Q: I am 67 years old. I have hypertension, which is controlled by medication. Apart from this I am not suffering from any other problem. I am taking Atorvastatin 10 mg and ASA 50 as prophylactic medicines. Recently, my cardiologist prescribed Deplatta A 75, a combination of Clopidogrel 75 mg and Aspirin 75 mg. He says this a very good drug to avoid heart attacks and stokes. But I have read that it has many side effects. Since I haven't had a heart attack, is it necessary for me to take this medicine? Will it be enough if I take Ecosprin 75 as prophylactic medicine. I want your opinion on the efficacy of this drug vs aspirin. Please advise.

A:Concurrent use of low-dose Aspirin with Clopidogrel has some benefit in what is called as secondary prevention, i.e. in those cases where the patient has already suffered from either stroke or heart attack. Both of them are basically blood-thinners. However, for prevention of heart attack or stroke in uncomplicated hypertension, low dose Aspirin such as ASA 50 is adequate. Clopidogrel can cause some serious side effects and should be taken only when clearly indicated.
