Q. How should flax seeds be consumed? How much should be consumed every day? Should flax seeds be eaten in a particular season?

A.  Flax seeds can be consumed raw/roasted as a part of daily breakfast. About 2-3 tsf of flax seeds can be taken daily. They can be eaten all round the year. The high levels of omega-3 fatty acids in flax seeds lower LDL (bad) cholesterol levels. It has anti-cancer properties and, as a natural lubricant and a rich fibre source, it lowers the risk of constipation. If intake is regular, there are fewer and less severe respiratory infections. A prudent mom should consider supplementing her diet with a daily tablespoon of flax oil during her pregnancy and while breastfeeding. Dry skin or eczema patients or whose skin is particularly sun-sensitive can take flax seeds regularly. Flax seeds reduce blood sugar levels in diabetes. Fats high in essential fatty acids, such as flax, increase the body's metabolic rate, thus helping to burn the excess, unhealthy fats in the body.
