What care should be taken by a pre-diabetic while planning a baby?

Q. I am a 27 years old female planning for a baby. I failed GTT test but my HbA1c levels are normal. I am taking glycomet (500 mg) twice a day and a folic acid tablet too.

A.  Before planning the baby, you will need to have the blood sugar under control. It is preferable to stop the metformin and control the blood sugar on a diabetic diet alone if possible. The renal function tests and HbA1c levels should be normal. Once pregnant - all these may again get deranged and a follow up throughout the pregnancy will be necessary. In some situations if the blood sugar is not controlled, especially in the last three months, even insulin may be necessary.
