How can pterygium in the eye be managed?

Q: I am a 25 years old male suffering from nakhuna (pterygium in the eye) for the last six years. The problem occurred when I got eye flu six years back. My vision is good but my infected eye turns red many times a day. As per doctor’s recommendation, I am using opthacare and zoamet for redness. The doctor told me that surgery is the only option but there is no guarantee as the problem can recur. How can it be managed?

A:Your eye condition is called Pterygium. This is usually caused by damage to the front part of the eye by sunlight (UV rays). Your doctor has given you correct advice that surgery is only option but recurrence rate is very high in spite of surgery.

However, the progress of this condition is so slow that it seldom affects vision which is why your doctor and I am advising you to delay surgery as long as possible. Try to wear proper sun glasses and/or base ball cap when ever you are in a sunny situation.
