What are the side effects of Minoxidil lotion?

Q: I have been diagnosed with male pattern baldness. I visited a dermatologist and he prescribed the following medicines: Finax 1md - I tab daily, Tugain Foam 5% - to be applied twice daily and 8X shampoo. I have taken about 3-4 tabs of Finax and then read on the internet about the side effects of Finax and am worried now. I have stopped the medication immediately. I want to know if I should take it or not? Do the side effects start manifesting themselves immediately as the drug is taken or do they show up when the drug is taken over a longer period of time?

A:Minoxidil lotion to be applied locally and Finastride tabs to be taken by mouth, are the accepted medicines for treatment of androgenetic alopecia. An appreciable number of patients respond to Minoxidil alone. Those who do not respond are the ones who can be given Finastride. The side effects are very infrequent. Fortunately these are reversible, once the medicine is withdrawn.
