Is it safe to take anti-allergic medicines for long?

Q: I am a 37 years old housewife suffering from nasal allergy. I got all check -ups done by an ENT surgeon. He advised Allegra 120 mg for severe sneezing. I often suffer from nasal blockage so I use Otrivin nasal spray, which gives only a little relief. I want to know whether prolonged usage of Allegra and Otrivin is good for health or does it have any side effects?

A:In allergic rhinitis, the treatment options are the use of antiallergic tablets (such as the ones you are taking) or nasal steroid sprays. There may be taken off and on long term with minimal side effects. Decongestant drops and sprays however should be used cautiously as extended use can lead to dependency.
