Am I on right treatment for diabetes?

Q: I am more than 10 years old diabetic patient. I am taking glyciphage PG-2 and glyciphage SR 500 mg before breakfast everyday but it failed to reduce my sugar level. My sugar levels are 110 to 140 fasting and 230 to 240 postprandial. My sugar levels are not coming down. Am I on right treatment for my diabetes?

A:Glyciphage P and glyciphage SR contain essentially the same medication, which is metformin, except that the latter is a sustained release preparation. The dose of metformin can be titrated up to maximum dose of 2500 mg/day in adults. If this alone is not enough, medications like glipizide, glyburide or glimepiride (sulfonylureas) may be added as your postprandial blood sugars seem to be high and these medications will be effective in such circumstances.
