Why do I have irregular periods?

Q: I am 32 years old woman and have two children - 6 and 2 years old with normal delivery. After the birth of my second son my periods have become irregular. I have done all the blood and hormone tests which resulted normal. What should I do? Please advise.

A:Have a gynaecological check up to look for any infection, hormonal imbalance, thyroid testing, any abnormal milk secretion, or any ovarian cyst or any anaemia. The treatment for the abnormal menses will depend on the cause found. Tests for cause like hormone estimations, haemoglobin, blood sugar, VDRL and trans-vaginal ultrasound maybe needed. The period can be regulated with hormonal pills that work as contraceptives as well as menses regulators, especially if there is no breast-feeding at that time. Other medications like progesterone only are also available - and given as per clinical picture. The menses diary too needs to be maintained and treatment given for 3-6 months.
