Did I contract HIV virus after an unprotected sexual encounter?

Q: I am a 35 years old male. I had unprotected sex with a sex worker two years back. I got a cut on the penis and started experiencing symptoms like diarrhea, headache, rash, fever, white tongue etc. two-three weeks after the exposure. ELISA test reports after three, six and nine months of the exposure were negative. I also underwent Western blot test, which also showed negative result. Currently, I have neck pain, headache, some red spots on hands, body pain especially near elbows and knees. Do you think I should get some more tests done? I fear that the virus entered my body because my body is different from what it used to be before the exposure.

A:Judging by our present knowledge of the virus and the test procedures I can only conclude that you are NOT infected with HIV. I have no doubt that you are correct and sincere in saying that you know that your body is different to what it was earlier, but this difference may well be in other ways and not due to the HIV but due to a change brought about by other factors including possibly your state of mind after the exposure. I would not advise you to have any further tests for HIV infection. All the evidence suggests that you were fortunate and did not get infected with HIV. Please do visit any convenient large hospital that has a counselling service and discuss your problem with the counselor.
