If a child gets HIV from the mother, who will die first?

Q: I want to ask if AIDS can be transmitted to an infant through his/her mother through breastfeeding? If so, then who will die first considering the mother too got AIDS just few days before her child?

A:Yes, if the mother is HIV positive and she has not received any interventions, the HIV infection can be transmitted from her to her baby during pregnancy, childbirth and through breastfeeding. The total risk is about 30% for this (mother to child) transmission. It is difficult to say who will die first due to AIDS. If both of them are put on correct interventions (e.g., Anti-Retroviral Therapy = ART), both of them can lead a long, healthy life. However, if there are no interventions, the HIV infected babies usually die within 2-5 years after birth.
