Injury - risk of infection

Q: When I was going for a walk, a used needle of a disposable syringe pricked my foot. Though there wasnt much bleeding, there was a dot of blood on the site of the prick. Yhe needle appeared old. I cleaned the area with soap and water soon after. What could happen? What else can I do to protect myself?

A:Given that the needle was old and the HIV virus is very fragile when exposed to air there is no meaningful risk of HIV infection. The risk of local infection has now passed. A tetanus toxoid injection would not go amiss but again the risk of contracting tetanus in these circumstances is negligible if at all.
